Make Progress on the Things that Matter for You

Complex issues rarely get solved by saying more or saying it louder.

They get solved by understanding what's really at stake, listening to the people involved, finding common ground where it exists, and figuring out what will actually move things forward.

I help organizations navigate complicated issues, build trust, and communicate with the people who influence the outcomes.

The right perspective. The right strategy. The right support.

Sometimes I bring an outside perspective. Sometimes I add experience and capacity to an existing team. Sometimes I help an organization convene the people, expertise and relationships it needs to move forward.

I apply the perspective, judgment, communications expertise and capacity that a situation requires, and know how to adjust my role as the work evolves.

Strategic Counsel

Good strategy starts with understanding the landscape.

Who matters? What do they care about? Where is there alignment? Where are the real disagreements? What's getting in the way? What could go wrong?

I help leaders and organizations see the situation clearly, identify the opportunities and challenges, and determine what will move the work forward.

Strategic Communications

Communications work best when they begin with the audience, not the message.

I develop communications strategies, positioning and messaging that help organizations explain complicated issues, engage skeptical audiences, navigate change and build credibility.

That can include executive communications, stakeholder communications, research and listening, crisis communications, communications strategy, writing, and other communications work that turns strategy into action.

Public Affairs

The path forward depends on more than what an organization says. It depends on whether what it says aligns with what it does.

Moving ahead depends on relationships, policy, politics, institutions, stakeholders and the broader public environment.

I help organizations understand and navigate those dynamics while communicating effectively with the people who influence what is possible.

A career built on complicated work

For more than three decades, I've worked with organizations and leaders facing consequential communications, public affairs and strategic challenges.

My work has taken me across sectors and issues, but the underlying question is remarkably consistent:

How do we understand the people we're trying to reach well enough to find a way forward?

That question shapes how I work today.
